Eleanor and the UDHR

Eleanor And The UDHR

Eleanor regarded the UDHR as her greatest achievement, and she worked throughout her life to create a world that upholds universal justice, dignity, and opportunity. The Eleanor Roosevelt Center at Val-Kill is the embodiment of those values; her work is the foundation of the ERVK’s mission and programs, which are designed to propel her leadership legacy into the 21st century.

From 1946 to 1953, Eleanor served as a U.S. delegate to the United Nations.

Her passionate commitment to the achievement of basic rights for all people, as well as her hard-earned knowledge of the political and cultural obstacles to securing them in a divided world, guided the creation and passage of the UDHR’s preamble and 30 articles. She worked to synthesize the concerns and beliefs of politicians and philosophers from around the globe into the declaration of basic rights and protections that is as relevant today as it was then.
